6/12/2023 0 Comments Heartburn book![]() ![]() Nora Ephron, the writer of Heartburn, must not have had an annoying relative from Brooklyn to scare her straight. Your partner's bad habits do NOT change, and they do, in fact, continue at the same level or increase. I did marry him, and I don't regret it, but, as much as I hate to admit it, the old bitch from Brooklyn was right. Every bad habit he has, he'll do it the same or more, so don't marry him unless you accept that you're marrying the bad behavior, too.” he will continue to do that, and he'll do it even more. Look at him and think of every bad habit he has, because whatever he does. ![]() She then pointed dramatically to my future husband and said in a very loud voice, “You see him? You see this man you want to marry? Well, look at him now, honey. When we gathered in the living room late in the evening to make a toast to our future marriage, one of the Brooklyn relatives came over and grabbed me by the shoulders and turned me to face everyone in the room. The night before I got married, my future in-laws hosted a rehearsal dinner for our wedding party and our out-of-town guests. ![]() ![]() Whether students are learning at school or at home, or are not yet school age, more grandparents have jumped into daily caregiver roles. The 72-year-old Bill, a former college sports administrator, and 70-year-old Mary, who worked as a nurse practitioner, volunteered to keep Will five days a week and oversee distance learning after their son and daughter-in-law were required to report in person to the school where they teach. Instead, they greet 8-year-old Will at the gate of their residential community in suburban Phoenix every school day, often rolling up in their golf cart. Drawing on a decade of research and clinical experience, psychotherapist and educator David Treleaven shows that mindfulness meditation-practised without an awareness of trauma-can exacerbate symptoms of traumatic stress. At first glance, this appears to be a good thing: trauma creates stress and mindfulness is a proven tool for reducing it. This means that anywhere mindfulness is being practised, someone in the room is likely to be struggling with trauma. At the same time, trauma remains a fact of life: the majority of us will experience a traumatic event in our lifetime and up to 20% of us will develop posttraumatic stress. From elementary schools to psychotherapy offices, mindfulness meditation is an increasingly mainstream practice. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments Oluo mediocre![]() ![]() Through the last 150 years of American history - from the post-reconstruction South and the mythic stories of cowboys in the West, to the present-day controversy over NFL protests and the backlash against the rise of women in politics - Ijeoma Oluo exposes the devastating consequences of white male supremacy on women, people of color, and white men themselves. What happens to a country that tells generation after generation of white men that they deserve power? Similarly, he expects Malacandra to be harsh and cold, but it is beauitful. Ransom (the main character who is taken by force to Malacandra) expects space to be dark and empty, but on his journey to Malacandra he finds it is full of light and angels. One thing I particularly noticed is how Lewis deconstructs the notion of the heavens as empty space. Its also interesting to see how early certain themes had settled into Lewis’ writing (it was originally published in 1938). He makes a lot of profound points about the nature of good and evil by contrasting the human characters with the creatures of Malacandra (which is the planet Mars, with un-fallen, intelligent inhabitants). Its not quite as good as the other two books in the space trilogy, I don’t think – but nevertheless its a lot of fun. ![]() I’ve been listening to Out of the Silent Planet this week. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments Le cinema selon hitchcock![]() ![]() ![]() In this manner, Truffaut could be said to have helped spark the New Hollywood era of American film in a roundabout way. To do so, he turned down the chance to direct the landmark film Bonnie and Clyde, but inadvertently set Warren Beatty on the course of not only starring in it, but producing it and getting Arthur Penn direct it instead. He is also notable for directing the adaptation of Ray Bradbury's book Fahrenheit 451 - his only English-language film. Truffaut is probably most famous for his first autobiographical film, The 400 Blows, which helped bring in the New Wave and was the first of several films featuring the character Antoine Doinel. He is hailed as one of the progenitors of the French New Wave, and as one of the greatest directors of all time.
